England reach World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990
Goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli seal victory over Sweden
England have reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990 after goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli secured a 2-0 victory over Sweden in Samara on Saturday.
Gareth Southgate's side will now face either Croatia or Russia in the semi-finals on Wednesday, as they look to reach their first World Cup final since 1966.
Maguire gave England the lead in the 30th minute with a powerful header from a Kieran Trippier free-kick, and Alli doubled their advantage in the 59th minute with a close-range finish from a Jesse Lingard cross.
Sweden pushed for a way back into the game but England defended resolutely, with Jordan Pickford making a number of fine saves to keep his clean sheet intact.
The victory is a huge achievement for Southgate and his players, who have exceeded all expectations at this World Cup.
